About Mock Exam:
It is the goal of every International Medical Graduate (IMG) in Canada to enter into the North American health care system.
Most of residency programs encourage IMGs to take an assessment clinical examination which is called Objective Structure Clinical Examination “OSCE”. Most of the IMGs in Canada who participated in OSCE exams have noted that the “Time Constrain” is a challenging aspect of the exam. Scientific knowledge is the most important factor to lead IMGs to success in any medical examination, however these examinations are highly competitive and OSCE isn’t only limited to scientific knowledge evaluation. OSCE exams are structured to assess the techniques of:
- History taking
- Physical examination
- Problem solving
- Data interpretation
- Investigations
- Management
- Communication skills
- Professional ethics.
IMGS are required to manifest their scientific and practical skills in several test stations. Every OSCE station covers different medical subject. In every station IMGs are asked to state the proper procedure and report findings. Time frame allocated to test stations in OSCE is fixed. IMGs need to be very calculative to perform the medical procedures on time. The examiners give credit to the IMGs according to the prepared check lists in every test station. These check lists are prepared to cover inclusion of:
- Diagnostic criteria
- Exclusion of differential
- diagnoses
- Probable risk factors
- Common complications that might have developed.
Why do I need a MOCK Exam
Physicians don’t feel the same pressure to complete a medical procedure on time in real medical practice. Medical system of many countries doesn’t provide any similar examination to OSCE. Most of IMGs participated in OSCE find this exam very unusual or different then what they experience in daily practice.. Many experienced physicians who have participated in OSCE mentioned that the lack of timed-practical skills is the main reason to fail or pass the OSCE exam with only average marks. Many residency programs in Canada select IMGs who have higher then average OSCE marks.
IMG Schools organize a simulated environment with real physicians as examiners and medical staff who play the role of patients and many test stations. Tests, checklists and documentations are identical to Canadian Ministry of Health exam materials. In each station IMGs get a chance to challenge their medical skills. IMGs have limited time in every station to perform a certain medical threatment and state their findings and move on. All of physicians in test stations are experienced with Quebec medical system and examination structure and they are willing share their valuable scientific and practical skills with new candidates and give them useful feedback essential for OSCE candidates.
